Noise Ordinance

Unreasonably loud noise can destroy the peace and tranquility of a neighborhood. Whether it's a "boom box" in a car played so loudly it rattles windows, a house party with loud music, or a car horn that won't stop, loud noise can be disturbing and unnecessary. The Noise Ordinance prohibits noise from loud car stereos that is plainly audible from inside a house or building, or plainly audible outdoors 50' or more from the source.

Ypsilanti Township's Noise Ordinance is a misdemeanor with penalties ranging from a $500 fine to 90 days in jail. This ordinance is enforced by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. Violations may be reported by calling the non-emergency number 734.994.2911 at the time of occurrence. The first available sheriff's deputy will be dispatched to investigate according to the priority of calls waiting for service.

Please provide the following information:

• The date, time and location of the offense.
• A description of the vehicle including make, model, color, and license plate number.
• A description of the vehicle operator including his/her name, if known.
• Your contact information if you want the responding deputy to contact you.

In order to have a successful prosecution, the offender must be identified by a witness who may be available to testify in court. In many cases, the responding sheriff's deputy may hear the violation themselves and be the witness.

For chronic neighborhood noise problems that need special attention, you may also attend your Neighborhood Watch meeting to discuss the situation and help form a solution.
